CAS Bags Intercollegiate Debate '09

Debaters Josephine Awa, Farell Relacion and Stela Marie Benitez from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) won as Best Debating Team in the Intercollegiate Debate at the Instructional Media Center (IMC) last January 21, 2009 at 8:30 a.m.

With the motion, "This House believes that death penalty deters drug trafficking", it was the initiation of the debaters from the College of Nursing and Midwifery into the Parliamentary debate format. As for the government side, the College of Nursing contigent composed of Allan Roy Elias, Jonie Arbas, and Neil Carlson Tan Sy stressed that death penalty discourages drug trafficking because the drug lords would rather choose their lives than the profits they earn. The death penalty would make drug lords think as it warns them thus, discouraging them to trade prohibited drugs.

The CAS, on the other hand, was consistent in their stand. The debaters reiterated that it is not death penalty that would deter drug trafficking. The strict implementation and enforcement of laws by the policemen would discourage the drug trafficking in the country.

In the end, the Opposition was declared the winning team by a unanimous decision. The best Debater was Tan Sy, the whipper of the Government while the Best Speaker of the House was Relacion, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Opposition as announced by Chief Adjudicator, Mr. Joey A. Cabrera.

Following last year's victory, this is the second time that CAS won as champion in the intercollegiate debate. The team was congratulated for defending its title as the Best Debating Team.
